Is Believing in Yourself Enough? Growth Mindset and Social Belonging Interventions for Postsecondary Students
In this NCEE Blog, Greg Walton, an associate professor of psychology at Stanford University and a College Completion Network member, discusses what college faculty, administrators, and students should make of the findings from studies of two types of interventions designed to help students succeed in college: one focused on growth mindset interventions and another on social belonging. The What Works Clearinghouse found that (1) neither type of intervention had a discernible effect on full-time college enrollment, (2) social belonging interventions had mixed effects on progressing in college and academic achievement, and (3) growth mindset interventions had potentially positive effects on academic achievement.
